Qualcomm has introduced two new 2nm flagship mobile chips, including the top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, to advance on-device AI, gaming, and imaging, signalling a shift towards an agentic AI era in premium smartphones.
Qualcomm has widened its flagship mobile line-up with two new premium chips, a move that marks a clearer push towards what it calls the agentic AI era. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 sits above the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, giving handset makers two distinct options for high-end phones rather than a single top-tier part. According to Qualcomm, both platforms are meant to support on-device AI, advanced gaming and stronger imaging features in devices from brands including HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo and Xiaomi.
The company says the pair are its first 2nm mobile platforms and that they share a redesigned core architecture built around a custom Oryon CPU, a reworked Adreno GPU and an upgraded Hexagon NPU. Qualcomm presents this combination as the foundation for running more capable AI assistants locally on the handset, reducing reliance on the cloud and improving responsiveness for tasks that need to happen in real time. The broader aim is to support larger multimodal models and persistent context, rather than the narrower AI features common in current premium phones.
In Qualcomm’s account, the Extreme model is aimed at the most demanding devices, including gaming-focused flagships and ultra-premium handsets. The company says it adds Adreno Neural Fusion, a graphics approach that folds AI processing into the rendering pipeline to improve frame generation, upscaling and ray tracing efficiency. It also highlights advanced professional video tools and image processing designed to support higher-end recording and photography workflows. Qualcomm’s product page says the platform supports 8K60 and 4K240 video capture, along with triple 64-megapixel cameras.
The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 keeps the same 2nm base, custom CPU design and flagship camera stack, but is positioned as a more widely deployable option for premium phones. Beebom reported that this chipset will arrive first in the Xiaomi 18 Pro, while the company’s broader partner list suggests a staggered rollout across several brands. Qualcomm’s split strategy gives manufacturers more room to balance cost, thermal limits and feature sets, while still building around the same AI-first platform design.
