Samsung positions Galaxy S27 Ultra for a major upgrade with expanded range and AI-driven features

Scheduled for release in early 2027, Samsung’s Galaxy S27 Ultra aims to redefine flagship standards with extended portfolio, enhanced battery life, and advanced hardware capabilities amid a subtly redesigned look.

Samsung’s next Ultra handset is being shaped as a more ambitious update than a routine annual refresh. According to recent reports, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to sit at the top of a widened flagship range that would also include a new S27 Pro tier, giving Samsung a more finely graded ladder between mainstream premium models and its most expensive device. The strategy would extend the company’s annual high-end portfolio and help it address buyers who want flagship features without paying Ultra-level prices.

The most consistent expectation across the latest reporting is that the phone will arrive in early 2027, not 2024 as one older rumour suggested. PhoneArena and SamMobile both point to a February 2027 window, which fits Samsung’s usual launch cadence for its Galaxy S series. Price estimates remain tentative, but several reports suggest a modest increase over the prior generation, reflecting higher component costs and new hardware.

Battery life appears set for a noticeable step up. The latest summaries point to a battery around 5,500mAh to 5,700mAh, depending on the source, which would place the device among the more heavily equipped mainstream smartphones on the market. Some reports also suggest Samsung may use silicon-carbon battery technology, a chemistry that can improve energy density and potentially support faster charging. If accurate, that would be one of the more practical upgrades for power users.

The camera system may also be simplified rather than expanded. Reports indicate Samsung is considering dropping the dual telephoto arrangement in favour of a single periscope zoom lens, alongside a 200-megapixel main sensor and an upgraded 50-megapixel ultrawide camera. SamMobile and PhoneArena both describe a redesigned rear module, with Samsung said to be exploring a horizontal layout instead of the floating ring design seen on earlier models. The company is also reportedly using inkjet printing for optical modules to reduce thickness and cut reflections.

On the performance side, the device is tipped to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, built on TSMC’s 2nm process. That would mark a significant move in both chip efficiency and raw processing power. Several reports also point to LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage, which should improve multitasking, app loading and sustained responsiveness. Gadgets360 notes that Samsung’s Exynos 2600 work shows the company is still balancing its chip strategy, but the Ultra is expected to remain tied to Qualcomm silicon in many markets.

The display is expected to remain one of the S27 Ultra’s core selling points. Current reports describe a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED panel with QHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, paired with Android 17 and Samsung’s One UI 9. PhoneArena also says Samsung may add Polar ID, a security feature intended to improve biometric authentication. If these details hold, the S27 Ultra would be less about a dramatic redesign than a carefully assembled package of faster hardware, better battery endurance and a cleaner industrial design.
