Apple’s new advice: store your iPhone at around 50% for better battery health

Apple recommends storing unused iPhones at about 50% charge and in cool, dry environments to prolong battery lifespan, challenging the common practice of full-charge storage.

Many iPhone owners assume the safest way to put an old device into storage is to charge it to 100% and leave it there. Apple says the opposite is better for the battery: long periods at full charge can speed up wear, while letting the phone run completely flat can push the cell into a damaging deep-discharge state.

According to Apple’s battery guidance, the preferred approach is to leave an unused iPhone at about 50% charge, then switch it off before storing it. The company says that helps minimise background power drain and keeps the battery in a more stable state. Apple also advises keeping the device in a cool, dry place, away from humidity and heat.

Temperature matters as much as charge level. Apple says lithium-ion batteries age faster in hot conditions, and its guidance for long-term storage puts the ideal environment below 32C. Even when an iPhone is powered off, it still loses a small amount of charge over time because of the battery’s natural self-discharge and the tiny amount of power needed to preserve basic functions.

For that reason, Apple recommends checking a stored iPhone and topping it back up to around 50% every six months. Other battery tips from Apple’s support material and device-care guides from Macworld, Tom’s Guide and Gadgets 360 also stress the value of avoiding extreme temperatures, keeping software updated and using sensible charging habits to preserve battery health over the long term.
