While reinstalling Windows can offer performance benefits, recent tests suggest that optimising existing systems and hardware upgrades, such as switching to SSDs, may be more effective and less disruptive than a full reinstall.
Reinstalling Windows, clearing out unwanted software and replacing an ageing drive can all help a sluggish PC feel faster, according to PCWorld, which looked at several of the most common performance fixes. But the publication also challenged one of the most persistent maintenance habits: the idea that a fresh installation of Windows is always the best way to restore speed.
Brad Chacos, editor-in-chief at PCWorld, described reinstalling the operating system as one of the more reliable ways to improve performance, largely because Microsoft’s platforms can gradually become cluttered over time. In practice, however, the same publication’s testing found only limited gains when comparing a year-old Windows 11 installation with a clean one, suggesting that modern systems may not slow down as dramatically as users often assume.
A more practical step, PCWorld said, is to review installed applications and remove software that adds little value. That advice is consistent with wider guidance from Windows Central, which has highlighted the recovery tools built into Windows 11, including Reset this PC and cloud-based repair options, as ways to fix problems without immediately resorting to a full reinstall. These tools can address system faults while preserving more of the existing setup than a wipe-and-rebuild approach.
Chacos also said that swapping a hard drive or older solid-state drive for a faster SSD can make a noticeable difference if the budget allows. Independent guides from Tom’s Hardware, Asurion and Manchester PC all point to SSD upgrades as one of the most effective hardware improvements for everyday responsiveness, particularly on older laptops and desktops. If Windows still feels slow after those steps, PCWorld suggested that some users may get better results by moving to Linux, which it said generally performs more efficiently than Windows on weaker hardware.
